Review of Amour (2012) by Jevro W — 23 Jul 2014
This movie is poignant and delves into complex emotions. The success of the film is hinged on the chemistry between Georges (Trintignant) and Anne (Riva). Their performances are spectacular. Thematically rich, this movie is about love, ageing and sickness.
It looks deeply into various relationships â?? the role of the caregiver (professional and family member) and the relationships between family members (husband, daughter, in-law). Scenes shift seamlessly and range in emotional impact - subtle to powerful.
Silence and sound are beautifully used in this film. The only critique is the theatricality of the ending which doesn't fit with the ordinariness of the first ¾ of the film. Perhaps the story couldn't have ended any other way, but it felt too artistically over the top for my liking.
