Review of Amour (2012) by Nilufer E — 07 Aug 2013
Just saw AMOUR again. Remembered every shot, every nuance. AMOUR is pure Michael Haneke. From the first long take of an audience gathering for a concert, their eyes staring right at us. But unlike most Haneke, the horror is within us--the degradation of our bodies.
His approach is distant and true, detailing every moment and every reaction. This is filmmaking of the highest order from one of our living masters but ultimately, the film left doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know.
The most interesting aspect is the title, AMOUR. Is this love? Is love really about selfishness and fear of being left alone? Or is AMOUR just a joke from Haneke making us think the film we are about to see is very different from what is on the screen? It's all of the above.
