Review of Amores Perros (2000) by Andrew H — 10 May 2012
So, basically everything that's good about Babel and 21 Grams is made even better in this little number. 21 Grams was extremely hard to follow and got annoying, but this is constantly riveting and clear without pandering to the audience.
The first story's kinda typical, but the second and third are absolutely amazing. Alejandro Gonzalez really had his shit together on this one, there aren't many false steps, all the performances are great, and the stories fit together perfectly, making it easier and more entertaining to follow them.
It's extremely greusome and disturbing, especially with that first scene (obvious nod to Tarantino with the dog bleeding to death in the back seat) and the car crash, but never exploitative. Just really really great.
