Review of Amityville: A New Generation (1993) by Ellen B — 23 Jun 2008
This has actually been my favorite so far of the "Amityville" sequels. Not because it's good - because it sucks, mind you - but because it doesn't take itself too seriously. It's not scary, and the plot is stupid as hell. It continues along the lines of possessed household objects from the original Amityville house, which was a stupid idea to begin with. And is it really too much to ask that the directors have some consistency with the story from movie to movie? Apparently it is, because the names of the families living in the Amityville house and the methods they were killed by changes each time, and it just drives me nuts.
Nevertheless, I say it was a kind of fun movie. They got right to the killing in about 15-20 minutes instead of "building suspense", and many of the death scenes were inventive and entertaining, which is really what you want in a horror movie. Plus, you get Richard fucking Roundtree, Mr. Shaft himself, in a bit part, which is both inexplicable and highly amusing.
