Review of Amistad (1997) by Jordan R — 01 May 2008
If it's a simplified piece of Hollywood history, it's a good story and one that should be heard. Relies on some cliches - the courtroom drama, the young lawyer, the crushing weight of an opposed state, etc.
I was most moved by the sequences where Cinque and one of his fellow slaves leaf through the Bible the night before their state-level trial. The joy they show on their first victory felt real to me when I saw it. An effort not wasted, in my opinion.
