Review of Amistad (1997) by Jeff B — 05 May 2011
One of the most powerful films I have seen about antebellum America. I believe that Steven Spielberg was excellent in his direction of this film even though it is nowhere near the caliber of Schindler's List, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.
T., and Saving Private Ryan. I think this film with its all-star cast made it even greater. The underrated Morgan Freeman was excellent as Joneson and Anthony Hopkins was excellent as well as John Quincy Adams.
However, it was Dijmon Hounsou as Cinque who stole every scene. You can feel his plight and the plight of all the captured Africans on his face. The great scene at the end of the film when he pleads "give us free" was as powerful as any courtroom scene in film history.
Definitely worth seeing and still holds a powerful grip today.
