Review of America's Sweethearts (2001) by Dan M — 07 Sep 2009
1: Despite the fact that the cast is excellent on the surface, the film lacks the something extra that can make the genre work. Cusack is one of the best in this kind of picture, but his chemistry with Zeta-Jones and Roberts falls a little flat.
The relationship between Roberts and Cusack is not nearly substantial enough to support the film. It's a bit too scattershot and haphazard to be successful. It flails about looking for its balance, but never quite finds it.
This is probably because the filmmakers try to pack in a few too many gags and characters and are too focused on poking fun of Hollywood to remember to make a romantic comedy.
