Review of American Teen (2008) by Fredrik C — 06 Jan 2009
A little too much filmmaker finesse for this "documentary" to feel truly authentic. A few subjects are interesting to watch, but you can't help but notice the unconvincing script like bad Revlon make-up, covering up any real texture to their lives.
It's a shame the filmmaker's could not trust their subjects or audience enough to make an honest documentary about life as an American teenager. The script spread thin among the subjects is all too sitcom to take seriously. I recommend checking out some of the projects PBS has turned out, and keep your eye out for an indie doc called PRESSURE COOKER; they are a lot more raw and far more compelling.
That said, it was easy to watch- kind of like reading a trashy teen vampire novel.
