Review of American Teen (2008) by Jon L — 30 Jan 2009
Appealing documentary about five middle-American teens and their high school, marketed as a kind of Breakfast Club for the 21st Century. It feels like it's too familiar, like it's been done; like it's too much like the John Hughs film.
With Reality TV shows so ubiquitous, and MTV's Real World so much more entertaining, I think back on American Teen now as not so special--like paying to go see a Reality TV show at the theater. Possibly the next genre of films, Reality Cinema? I know it's been done before, but scripting perameters for the players to "act" within.
..I guess we'll see. Hannah Bailey is the most interesting of the teens.
