Review of American Teen (2008) by Nicolas M — 10 Feb 2009
Reality shows have changed the definition of documentary. Unless they were to film these kids without them knowing (which would be illegal, at least it was pre-Bush...hey-oh!) and exercise a light hand during editing, there's an element of skepticism that overshadows everything the "subjects" say and do.
Even so, I felt like they captured some real, undisturbed moments that most teens experience, searching for yourself and obsessing about the light at the end of the tunnel. On a side note, my God, I graduated from HS over 10 years ago.
F*ck, I'm old! I'm not really upset, I just like to quote SATC whenever possible. Poor Megan got it in the face. Favorite line: "I love your dress! It's so... bright.".
