Review of American Splendor (2003) by Vincent M — 03 Mar 2008
'American Splendor' is an adaptation of the popular underground comic book series of the same title that chronicled the life of it's author and won the admiration of comic nerds throughout North America in the 70s.
Dealing with mediocrity and maintaining a high level of respect for comic books as an art the film is always intriguing, touching, introspective and exerts a subtle sense of humor that made me grin for it's entire runtime.
The cinematic aspects of the film were brilliant. Key sequences literally become comic book pages and characters from the pages leak into the live action scenes and visa versa. Viewers who can relate to 'American Splendor' will adore it's realism and honesty.
If superheroes have special powers to help them overcome obstacles then doesn't our lack of therefore render our successes and failures even more spectacular?
