Review of American Splendor (2003) by Kiefer F — 27 Jan 2010
Paul Giamatti IS Harvey Pekar, America's most beloved comic-book curmudgeon. From the opening credits following Giamatti's Harvey, scowl on his face, hands in his jacket pockets, pacing the bleak streets of Cleveland, I knew this was going to be a truly original comedy.
The real Harvey shows up from time to time as a kind of Greek chorus, commenting on his fictional counterpart, his mundane life as a VA file clerk, and his unlikely rise to his 15 minutes of fame. Hope Davis is also fun to watch playing Harvey's somewhat eccentric wife Joyce.
