Review of American Me (1992) by Rene L — 24 Aug 2012
I remember Rogert Ebert wrote that one unrealistic part of this movie was when the cops pull over and question Santana (Olmos' character) in the street for no apparent reason. That's when I realized that not everybody is going to get this movie because they actually do stop people for no reason in East La.
I guess you have to have some understanding about the hood to really appreciate this movie. This is a great gangster movie that talks about how the Mexican Mafia prison gang was formed. Many actors were actual gang and locals from East LA.
After the movie, many people were killed in real life because the movie gave too much information about how the Mexican Mafia operates. Olmos later asked authorities for the right to carry a gun. Good movie.
