A wickedly compelling thrill ride, American Made is a superb docu-dramedy about the US interference in foreign nations, and the hypocrisy of politics behind closed doors. Featuring sharp editing, stylish direction and an uncompromising script, this film manages to succeed where most of the genre have failed.

By the end of the journey, there's a feeling of completion without ever resorting to a staged morality play, in fact bringing the Seinfeld writer's room motto to mind: no hugging, no learning.

And yet, Doug Liman's film offers plenty to reflect upon, mirroring with painful accuracy the current political climate. One of the most unexpectedly poignant films of the year, American Made not only features one of Tom Cruise's career high points, but it also helps solidify Doug Liman as a great director, often overlooked, director.
