Review of American Made (2017) by Richard B — 03 Jul 2018
Cruise Control.
Finally, a Tom Cruise film that takes advantage of his screen persona, that of rakish optimism and amorality to great effect. After the Mummy bomb and the increasingly tedious Mission films, Doug Limon coaxes out the Hollywood star to be, well, Tom Cruise.
This true life tale of an ambitious grifter former TWA pilot to become entangled with the CIA and Columbian drug lords is stranger than fiction. But it is a riot of fun. It's a bit like Cruise's version of The Wolf of Wall Street - more like The Cruise of Crack Street. There is a moral lesson in this one, much worse than the Wolf, but somehow it still glows with good old American optimism. Maybe American Hustle is a cousin too, albeit a superior one. Nonetheless, you will love this tale of the fabulous Barry Seal, whose life is almost unbelievable.
Limon directs from a sharp script and no one puts a foot wrong.
