Review of American Hustle (2013) by Felipe C — 06 Jul 2014
Is it possible to out-Scorsese Scorsese? David O. Russell did it this time in this fun and brilliant film. With wonderful.
Layered and memorable characters, who are played by remarkable actors like Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner, this movie captivates you from the beginning to the end. With this film, it was the characters that carried the movie, not the storyline. While it was loosely based on Abscam, which was a CIA operation that did deal with political figures being bribed by the sheik, the hustle was on multiple layers pertaining.
to each and every character. Each character was rich and different and their roles were perfect, demonstrating how amazing the actors are. The standout character was Christian Bale's character Irving Rosenfeld, which turns out to be one of Bale's most memorable performances. There are surprising cameos and the dialogue was pulchritudinous but it even though the film was great as a whole, it didn't capitalize on certain moments where it would have taken this film to a whole new level. Besides that, there was one scene that felt like overacting but it was used as comedic relief. Overall 4 stars for the acting performances, beautiful period piece, great dialogue and a wonderful delivery by David O. Russell. It would have been 5 stars but it felt like there was an underutilized opportunity the story could have went.
