Review of American Honey (2016) by Mike N — 31 Oct 2016
Hidden in this nearly 160-minute exercise is a brilliant 100-minute film.
I put aside my weariness of Shia LaBeouf's "celebrity" and sought his acting. It's there in spades, along with spades of his artiness, which feels forced. Then I read that he acquired 12 tattoos during the making of this film. Is that from the book of "Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Weirder" or was that revealed to make the film feel "extra wow" to the sleeved and shirted ink crowd?
This film is a meal of amazing tidbits among a mountain of starch.
I found it exhausting.
