Review of American Honey (2016) by Refulgent S — 12 Feb 2018
It's the opposite of what you might think. Instead of getting another philosophical teen drama that looks like a long commercial, we go on a journey with young low lives, who want to make some money.
The main character soon learns that it's not just a group of friends, but sort of a company. The plot focuses mainly on love and youth, but the most captivating thing is the overall mood. The director manages to visually portray emotions.
It feels like a long road trip and doesn't leave the audience with just that. There is a facultative spiritual value if you choose to pay attention. Yes, there's a lot of catchy tunes thrown in there, but they don't have the same purpose they do for example in Xavier Dolan's movies, or should I say, music videos.
They never do anything less than support the story, show characters' carelessness or emphasize the importance of music for this particular culture. "American Honey" is not just a film. It's a broad depiction of a big part of society.
