Review of American History X (1998) by Gavin S — 04 Oct 2012
Edward Norton is fantastic in this, and Edward Furlong reminds us how good he was too. An honest, unflinching look at race in America, intolerance, hate, ignorance, and how it is passed from generation to generation.
What really lifts it into something memorable is the performance of Norton. He seethes with hatred, strikes like a coiled snake, and his eyes burn so intensely it's nearly psychotic. There are a few lazy turns in filmmaking, however you can't help but root for him to make it with his new found tolerance.
I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting for the violent end which I expected, and I'll let you figure out what you thought about it yourself.
