Review of American Fable (2017) by Roger G — 27 Dec 2017
American Fable is a quiet, brooding little slice of magic realism. Set in the sprawling Midwest during the farm crisis of the 80s, it revolves around Giddy, a young girl who discovers a man being held prisoner in an abandoned silo on her family's farm.
There are a few flaws here--the surreal element sometimes doesn't blend so seamlessly with the rustic realism, for instance--but the overall effect is phenomenal in an understated way.
