Review of American Fable (2017) by Meem M — 09 Aug 2017
This is an amazing movie, beautifully shot and beautifully acted by the talented Peyton Kennedy. When young Gitty finds out that her family is involved in the kidnapping of an wealthy financier poised to posses their farm, she must decide what to do.
Gitty's dilemma is made more poignant by the fable told by the kidnapped man, and repeated by her father, that of the lion and the mouse. This provides the audience with the foreboding that once released, the developer will continue buying up farms, Gitty's included, just like the lion chewed up it's helper, the mouse.
Gitty is never too precocious for her age, and her emotions and turmoil stay completely believable. Her love for her father make the kidnapping initially almost acceptable to her, but her growing friendship with the kidnapped man pushes her to take a stand.
This is a raw, intense yet somehow beautiful coming of age story set in the Farm Crisis of the 80s that is a treat to watch.
