Review of American Beauty (1999) by Erin B — 18 Aug 2012
A unique, artistic portrayal of the modern American family faced with trying to find happiness in their ordinary by escaping the American dream of the 90s.
The film delves into the issues of identity involving puberty and mid-life, drug use, family dysfunction, homosexuality, body image, and career paths.
The acting in this film is pristine. Kevin Spacey's best role. Excellent supporting acting with Annette Benning, Thora Birch, and West Bentley. Character development is great.
Intertwined with surrealistic scenes and haunting piano songs, the poetic undertones and poetic screenplay and cinematography is spot on.
