Review of American Beauty (1999) by Carson M — 20 Aug 2012
I gotta say, all of this felt a helluva lot deeper when I was in the clutches of horomonal angst. Now that I'm ever so slightly more reasonable, the script, which is deliberately off-kilter, feels rather condescending.
A statement on the state of affairs in America could have been a lot more subtle and a lot deeper. It wins points for an earnest approach, and also for one sequence of absolute beauty (the 'bag scene') and, of course, Mr.
Spacey's remarkable performance, but the film has such a heavy-handed approach that it's hard to take anything away from it except a faint feeling of ickiness.
