Review of American Assassin (2017) by Don F — 04 Oct 2017
American Assassin was a disappointment. I was really hoping it would be a springboard for the talented Dylan O'Brien to take on more mature, action-oriented roles vs his previous roles. And I was also hoping it would be a comeback of sorts for Taylor Kitsch.
While I don't really have criticisms of either of their performances, it's the movie's other talents that proved to be a letdown and kept the movie at the shallow end of the pool. I found Michael Keaton's portrayal of Stan to be predictable.
Sanaa Lathan's Irene Kennedy could have easily been played by any actress as she brought no originality or character intrigue to the part. The script was full of cliche and predictability, I swear I was lip syncing to the parts.
But the movie's biggest downfall was the plot. Just nonsensical, at best. I gave it two stars just because I don't want to be "that person", but this was a disappointment of a movie.
