Review of American Animals (2018) by Gregory E — 10 Oct 2018
More than a heist movie, "American Animals" is an interesting portrait about how immaturity, leisure, the eternal nonconformity of consumerism culture and privilege are key factors of an incipient criminal mind.
Bart Layton's biggest risk is to alternate fiction with real interviews with the four protagonists of this story, sometimes even mixing them with his alter egos. It could have felt like a desperate attempt to generate empathy, but the trick works really well because there is no patronage nor concessions.
An interesting narrative hybrid that is rarely used. A nice surprise.
