American Animals is a wildly entertaining film that is a thrilling ride and also, happily, smart and intelligent and quite poignant. It's a true story and it's certainly different from your usual heist films.
Set in Kentucky over a decade ago a disparate bunch of young men decide to steal a rare book located at Transylvania University. On face value it seems fairly straight forward but there's a whole lot more going on.
They are definitely not hardened criminals and their plans are clearly based on more than just financial gains. They are looking for something different, a break from their lives. A burst of danger even.
The young cast are great are great, especially Barry Keoghan and Evan Peters. The film has a great pace and is filmed with great ingenuity, the characters are well fleshed out and easy to invest in even with their criminal activities.
As an added bonus real life interviews with the subjects of the film are inter weaved through the film giving it a uniquely interesting flavour.
