Review of Amer (2009) by Kevin N — 01 Apr 2010
I was very excited for this movie, and it almost met my expectations. It's a modern giallo- legitimately, it doesn't just where the costume. The problem is that Cattet and Forzani have put all their concentration into the style of the film, and their story lacks the power of the work by earlier masters like Argento and Bava.
The first of the three stories in this anthology of sorts works the best, even when it shamelessly steals from 'Black Sabbath'. Tension is built through a wonderful sound design and a tight use of close-ups.
It isn't very affecting, but this Freudian giallo should tide genre fans over at least until the next attempt. (SxSW).
