Review of Amer (2009) by The Movie W — 15 Oct 2011
This French psycho-sexual drama does for Italian genre cinema what Tarantino did for crime cinema. Every frame is born out of the Italian tradition, especially the Giallo, and celebrates the genre tropes and conventions as a method of exploring sexual trauma and repression.
With little spoken dialog, every action, thought, and feeling is conveyed visually - the way cinema should be. Broken into chapters, every section evokes a different director. The initial 15 minutes are pure Argento, followed by 15 minutes of Bava-ness that makes me miss The Maestro all the more.
The finale oozes Sergio Martino, and while not specifically giallo directors, the middle channels Tinto Brass by way of Sergio Leone (and it's the vibe is an uncomfortable as it sounds).
