Review of Amélie (2001) by K-Lin C — 19 Apr 2012
Amelie reminds me of myself: quiet, painfully shy, yet driven by her aspirations, and not without a bit of mischief. I love all of the "stratagems" she has for improving the lives of those around her. All of these characters are unique and colorfully developed, each with his or her own character tag, including the garden gnome, and the lamp and the painting in Amelie's room (which are my favorites.).
The story is cute and simple, and narrated in the most hillariously matter-of-fact way. What I find most interesting about this movie, though, is the way in which it's filmed: using mainly shades of red and green, with a randomly placed blue object every once in a while. It gives the film an original, artistic quality that I find quite fitting to the simplicity of the story.
The soundtrack is positively addicting, and makes me think of Normandy whenever I listen to it.
It's a great rainy-day movie, a feel-good kind of story that I think anyone would enjoy, especially those with an artistic eye. That is, unless you're turned off to watching a movie entirely in French.
