Review of Amélie (2001) by Tyler C — 13 Oct 2014
American Hustle is so good I don't even know where to begin. The movie is about two con-artists Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser who get caught by an FBI agent Richie DiMaso while doing one of their con-jobs and are forced to do a job in order so that they won't have to spend time in jail.
American Hustle gets lost in it's fantastic characters and sometimes it's difficult to remember what exactly they were doing most of the movie because honestly it's really confusing, but most times you know what's going on and you have some understanding of the situation they're in whether it be a dangerous one or a delicate one.
The movies main strength though is the characters. Every single one of them is cast perfectly. And I mean absolutely perfectly. Even Robert DeNiro was cast perfectly and he wasn't even on the screen that long.
As well as Louis C.K. I don't even like him that much and he does great in his role. And while I did likeBradley Cooper's character his character really annoyed me A LOT but most of the time that was a good thing because Richie DiMaso is annoying for the following reason: HE'S THE ONE CHARACTER IN THIS MOVIE WHO HUSTLES THE MOST AND HE DOES NOT SLOW DOWN.
Richie is a very naive guy who thinks that things are going to turn out the way he expects them to, he has a fantasy for the way things should be, and when things don't turn out the way he wants them to he gets disappointed.
And he's also just extremely gullible, not dumb or stupid, but he's not perceptive, he doesn't take anything with a grain of salt and worst of all: he doesn't listen. I mean seriously he wouldn't even shut up for a minute to listen to a simple fishing story until it was finished and he just assumed that he knew what the ending was going to be to the story.
Only until it's too late does he realize that he's been duped and that he was foolish for thinking that way. That pretty much sums up his downfall in the movie so be on the lookout for that. One thing I really enjoyed about this movie though is that it breaks the mold of what being attractive for women and men is (Just to clarify before anyone says anything, I'm straight).
When we compare Irving and Richie physically and mentally they're two different men. But one is more attractive than the other in opposite ways. Irving, while physically is an unattractive potbellied man with a combover, is still attractive despite his physical unattractive qualitites.
At least that's what Sydney thinks and Sydney even says in the movie: "He wasn't necessarily in good shape and he had this combover that was elaborate, but he had this confidence that drew me to him.
" And compared to Richie, Irving was still more attractive in Sydney's eye, even though Richie was in shape and he actually had hair, he was unattractive because he was an idiot in more ways than one.
And that ties in with what I was talking about in terms of Richie as well. Also because while Richie thinks ahead to the future Irving actually plans for it and Irving ends up beating Richie in the end and still gets out of his situation with the FBI.
I have to mention Jennifer Lawrence on this as well. And while I like Jennifer Lawrence and I think she is a good actress and I think that she is pretty this movie made her appear as an unattractive blondes.
Because she's just one of those ditzy girls whose nothing but big boobs and a nice butt. And she's just as unattractive as an ugly chick because you can't like someone if they're utterly dumb.
At least I can't. She didn't even know when to keep her mouth shut in very sensitive situations with the gangsters and that to me was unattractive. At least I could understand how Irving found her unattractive since she frustrated the heck out of him and while he really made an effort to be with her and to love her he just couldn't handle how utterly dumb she was.
And he thought more highly of Sydney because she was attractive not only because of her looks, but because of her intelligence. And on one final note. I remember having a conversation about this movie with someone and I remember her talking about how this movie seems to drag on forever because David O.
Russell was trying to give everyone their share of screen time so as be fair and because they all did a fantastic job. And while I agree with her completely on the matter, I think that if David O. Russell hadn't given the actors their fair share of screen time that would have taken away from the movie a little bit because that was American Hustle's main strength: the characters that were on screen for however long or short their role was.
All in all American Hustle is a fantastic movie. Well done David O. Russell!
