Review of Amarcord (1973) by Mirko B — 08 Feb 2009
Fellini definitely set a cinematic milestone with this intimate, poetic portrayal of his growing up in Rimini, Italy. The film is full of expressive moments, and the photography is gorgeous. Monica Bellucci's Malena was apparently inspired by Fellini's sensual Gradisca, whom the lead character craves.
Amarcord is a testimony of awareness of one's roots and love for them. The film's poetics resemble Marc Chagall's surreal depictions of Vitebsk and Paris.
