Review of Amarcord (1973) by Yash S — 27 Apr 2009
This film is like one of those large-scale social anatomy novels of the 19th century. Except it isnt morally judgemental, since its Fellini at the helm. The film is presented as a gallery of self-contained comic episodes. Ordinary people all just striving to get by. A political system that keeps its citizens in collective stupidity, by maintaining a mindset of fear. An aristocracy that shamelessly exploits the poor. A religious orthodoxy whose sole aim is to bottle up people's sex drives, and promote a mindset of guilt.
There are some beautiful images & unforgettable scenes in this movie. Like the peacock in the winter, or the "Emir" with his 30 concubines. The director's command over the medium is amazing.
