Review of Altered States (1980) by Chris H — 29 Jul 2011
Truly excellent, intelligent SF cinema. It reminded me of Carlos Castaneda's novels and many lyrics of the band Tool, which is a good thing. The scene with him running around in a primitive ape form I felt was a little too long and laboured, sometimes the score didn't feel like it matched the scenes (too cheerful), and I'm both concerned and taken with the idea that the bond of love can conquer even the grandest terror of the universe.
But wow is this a brilliant film. I had to purchase it immediately after seeing it. I've always liked Hurt, but my appreciation for him has reached new levels. I've bought the book since also, but am yet to read it.
I see why they chose Blair Brown for Fringe now, since she has SF history here. One of my all time favourites.
