Review of Alphaville (1965) by Riley H — 29 Jun 2007
This movie is so fucked up I don't even know what to say...just unbelievably nutty to the point where you want to throw up your hands and say ?ok, I give up, I won't try to apply anything to this any more.
? I certainly could have been more forceful in the critique that is ostensibly at the centre of it, but I think that's part of the point. To paraphrase Richard Rorty, in order to critique the dominant rationalism/scientism/logicism at work in the 'positivist' approach, one must remove oneself from it completely.
So to make one's attack on it conform to the expectations of the society formed by such an approach is self-defeating. I think that's what's going on. I also think he was having fun. Anyway, this movie is crazy.
Just crazy. As crazy, or maybe even crazier than ?Week-End.? As enjoyable. Though I may be a minority, I think I prefer the more anarchic Godard to the more restrained Godard.
