Review of Alphaville (1965) by Dolorès P — 20 Oct 2007
Superb French dystopian thriller from Godard. Two things I particularly like are the 'Bibles' which proliferate only to turn out to be dictionaries, and the strange execution squads that consist of thought criminals being shot into a swimming pool and knifed by sexy female synchronised swimmers.
Discordantly avoiding all special effects whilst deploying a sci-fi heavy script, Godard makes the point that science fiction at its best is never actually truly escapist, but about things all around us right now.
Pulpy and smart all at once.
