Review of Alphaville (1965) by Tony D — 20 Jan 2009
Alphaville certainly has a place in cinematic history but more for what it influenced than for what it actually is. without it we wouldnt have films like blade runner, the terminator, or the matrix because of its sensibilities and themes.
but as a film its too intentional and disconnected. the erratic pace and focus of the film make it impossible to follow and for some reason godards dialog is so stilted that it comes very close to incomprehensible.
we get that in a lot of his films but looking back at the likes of breathless, there seemed to be more of a drive toward something other than the treacle of "love is the definitive thing that makes us human.
" I mean....come on.
