Review of Alpha (2018) by Wycal W — 24 Aug 2018
So --- Last Sunday, I walked in the movie theater for the 11:00AM show of "Alpha" and was pleasantly surprised to find the seats were almost all filled.
It turned out to be a fantastic movie with a clean cut story line, well-designed plots, sophisticated directing and acting, and of course, dazzling and thoughtfully used computer generated effects seamlessly combined in 97 minutes of viewing experience. I walked in the theater with a "well, another story about man's best friend" attitude and walked out of the theater with my eyes wet and heart melted, almost overwhelmed by the depth of emotions that this movie was able to trigger.
What I like most about Alpha is its being so powerful and beautiful in a very simple and elegant way. With the tale following a classic 3 Act screenplay structure, premise set in Ice age (Europe, 20000 years ago; a time and place full of imagination and desperation, when survival was the only thing that matters), all dialogues in a language that nobody in the audience understands (believe it or not, there's no English spoken throughout the movie; just subtitles, which is absolutely amazing;), and "go home" being the dramatic needs for both main characters (a young boy and a wolf; both abandoned by their group/pack) in the film, the story just progressed smoothly in such a heartfelt way that, among all the plot points, there's gonna be one that touches you deeply, because the movie is really about loyalty -- something that seems very simple yet sometimes could be completely out of reach when people need it the most, regardless whether it's the ice age or modern society.
Another really good thing about Alpha is that while it includes many fighting scenes, they're not gross at all -- little violence so that the entire family can enjoy it.
I really like film and sincerely hope it goes well in box office. :).
