Review of Almost Human (2014) by Randy P — 26 Feb 2014
While you can definitely feel the love of genre filmmaking coming from behind the camera, ALMOST HUMAN falls short of being the ode to 1980s gore flicks that it's so clearly trying to be. The period setting should have made for a unique, throwback visual look, but apart from the clothes and the cars, the film looks like it was shot last week, with none of the texture or grime that this sort of story would have featured back in the '80s.
It's plot is a mish-mash of popular horror ideas, and while there's certainly some pleasure to be found in the way they're implemented, the filmmakers never take things to the next level and do something truly original with those ideas.
That said, there's at least one legitimately terrific gross-out moment, and the makeup effects are kind of neat, albeit in a do-it-yourself, ultra-low-budget sort of way. I suspect there are plenty of people who'll get a kick out of this, and by all rights I should have been one of them, but it just didn't really click with me.
