Review of Allied (2016) by Troy B — 01 Dec 2016
Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard star in the war time drama directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future).
Pitt plays Max Vatan, an army intelligence officer who falls for French resistance fighter Marianne Beausejour (Cotillard) when they are on a mission to assassinate a German ambassador. However, when they marry and return to London, Vaton is asked by his superiors to investigate his new wife as she is suspected of being a German spy.
The story is well told, intriguing and looks magnificent however, there is very little in terms of chemistry between the two leads so you don't really buy their relationship. There are also several moments in the film where you believe the director is taking some liberties with believability in order to create some tension. For example there's scene where a heavily Cotillard gives birth, during an air raid, outside.
If you can put all that aside it is a solid enough film with an intriguing story.
