Review of Allegiant (2016) by David M — 26 Sep 2016
Latest installment in what seemed to start as a Hunger Games wannabe (Young female protaganist? Check. Dystopian Future? Check. Authority-is-bad message? Also check), that is even falling the steps of its more illustrious predecessor in splitting the final novel into tow distinct films.
Or, at least, that was the intent - it has been recently announced that, following the poor box-oofice reception to this, the final part will more likely be a TV series than a film.
The plot? Chcago (where the last couple of films were set) is actually part of an experiment, ran by those outside the city, with the divisions within (re the factions system) designed to produce a Divergent, or someone who is not so easily categorised. Why this experiment? Because those running it believe that mankind can be split into two distinct categories: the 'Pure' and the 'Damaged', with the latter those whose ancestors had some sort of gene therapy (it's all explained a bit better in the books and films than I've just done).
Because, if History has taught us anything, it's that it's such a good idea to categorize people ...
(as only Trior Prior seems to realise, and points out).
Perhaps better than the last entry, but not brilliant, with curiously leaden final scenes leading to the abrupt ending!
