Review of Allegiant (2016) by Junelkean — 18 Jan 2018
Brace yourselves for yet another dystopian young adult sci-fi film, starring yet another group of teenagers rising a revolution against the evil adult oppressors of the society. And wait, it's not "The Hunger Games". It's not "The Maze Runner". Yep, it's "The Divergent Series: Allegiant". So basically, it's like the first two movies, albeit with higher stakes and heavier CGI. But "Allegiant" proves that bigger doesn't always mean better.
Shailene Woodley is back for the third time as Tris. And while she is the mere compelling redeeming figure of the saga (because of her role), the supporting cast are generic stereotypes, especially the poorly fleshed out antagonist played by Jeff Daniels.
Not only Allegiant is forgettable pleasure, it's also an example on how an entire supporting cast or even versatile actors like Ansel Elgort, Naomi Watts and Octavia Spencer be reduced into one-note characters. It's indeed a shame, because the movie at least offers an ambitious idea about political power and has a potential to be the "Mad Max: Fury Road" of 2016.
