Review of All the Pretty Horses (2000) by Bruce B — 16 Oct 2008
The film is for lack of a better word hollow. There is some excellent choice of cinematographic shots throughout, including some humbling widescapes of desert landscapes and the Rio Grande. However, the immersive nature of these shots is undone by the poor choice of camera techniques, such as interposing close ups and slow motion shots that are unnecessary and distracting.
The acting, not just of the film's lead romance but of all the characters lacks any cohesiveness and fails to come together. The musical score is disappointing. As for the plot, I have not read the book, but the film feels as if we're on the outside looking in at just about everything, getting the Cliffs Notes of a larger novel.
