Review of All the President's Men (1976) by Donnie D — 23 Apr 2011
#AllThePresidentsMen A number of reviews have addressed the abrupt ending. Yes, it is abrupt. But the point (and this was probably a lot clearer in the atmosphere of the 70's) is exposure. That there was hidden, government-sponsored criminal activities going on and no one was pursuing the story with journalistic diligence except for Woodward and Bernstein (the NY Times might argue differently).
When the story was picked up, the journalistic manhunt of W/B ended. They won by doing the legwork that made everyone realize that the unthinkable was now thinkable. Of course, government scandals are page 2 news now.
We are jaded and cynical. In fact, quite a few folks believe that the Clinton hounding was payback for Watergate. But that's not the point here. This is an excellent detective movie. If only Nixon had gotten into a long car chase or shootout at the end, then everyone would be happy.
