Review of All the Money in the World (2017) by Richard B — 30 Apr 2018
The film is a modest success, watchable largely because of the performance by Christopher Plummer as the miserly and detestable J Paul Getty. It was fortuitous that Kevin Spacey had to be replaced by Plummer, since Spacey is a mediocre actor while Plummer is an exceptional one who also has the right physical appearance for the role.
The film has moments of some drama, but too often has a somewhat slack quality and drags on a bit due to the editing. The direction is fine, and some of the visuals very effective. The story doesn't maintain suspense that well, but I think that wouldn't be as noticeable if the other main performances were stronger.
Michelle Williams has a kind of stilted quality to her acting here and never seems that convincing in her emotional arc. Mark Wahlberg is miscast, but he does OK despite not having the right gravity for his role.
Charlie Plummer as the kidnapped JPG III is a creditable actor, as is the man playing the kidnapper who befriends his prisoner.
