Review of All That Jazz (1979) by Emily S — 04 Oct 2011
Originally, I saw this musical when it was first released, I was underage and had to sneak into the theater. Frankly, at the time, I enjoyed it but didn't understand most of it. Now, after having had open heart surgery myself many years later, I revisited this movie with new eyes and sensibility.
The reason the musical is so self indulgent is because open heart surgery has a very self indulgent recovery process. It throws into question everything you think you know, and makes life a much more precarious experience. It can definitely create an existential crisis. The post operative hallucinations are abysmal and for the entire list of side effects I suggest you visit WebMD.
For me, this musical is fascinating and a reflection of the process he probably went through, because it really resonated with me. And frankly, it showed a sort of "cool" that he experienced this and then choreographed it.
