Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) by Glomman — 11 Dec 2022
Compared to the original from the 30s, this movie holds up pretty well, altough it should be said that of course the different narratives, from all movies and the book diverge in some places. That is not a bad thing. I still like the original version from the 30s more, yet this movie accomplishes the feat of humanising the soldiers who are thrown into the grinding and dehumanising machine of war better than its predecessor. And I also like that this is an entirely German production with German actors, really adds to the authenticity of the movie. However, if that's the main goal of it, can be disputed; if the sole reason of a movie was to be authentic, you'd be better off just watching a documentary.
A surprisingly good Netflix movie, not one of the best ones I saw this year in general, but definitely domething memorable.
