Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (2022) by Bertobellamy — 29 Oct 2022
Following the spirit of 'Saving Private Ryan' — and kind of being the counterpart of '1917' —, the new adaptation of 'All Quiet on the Western Front' shows the horrors of war through the eyes of a patriotic young man that quickly realizes what he has signed for.
With astounding battle sequences — as intense as gory —, the film shines for its production design, photography, and editing. But it's Felix Kammerer's acting that steals the show; it's through his face that we get to see the nightmarish world that war is.
There's also a political plot that gives some context, but I think that could've been developed more because it disappears during the third act. Either way, I hope this film gets the nomination for Best International Film next year.
This isn't another 'Come and See,' but its anti-war message sure comes at the right moment.
