Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Eric K — 27 May 2007
This is one of those movies that leaves you sitting in a cautious, horrified silence. It was grim, harsh, brutal, real, and intense. Music was only used when necessary and not during battle scenes, thus lending more credibility to the action.
The cast was fantastic, particularly Ayres, who truly created Paul. There were two scenes that really stand out, those being the battle in the graveyard and Paul being trapped in a shell crater with a dead soldier.
Finally, seeing things from the enemy perspective really shed some light on the true nature of warfare.
