Review of All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) by Lee B — 30 May 2009
My lack of sentimentality for war films is only fertilized by this one. trying to keep enthused for the entire 2 hours was a chore unto itself, and the poor dialogue and weak structure made it even harder.
The preachiness of the story was cliche to say the least, whether or not it was in fact the first in the 'anti-war' genre is beside the point...
Essentially, I question the reasoning behind showing the futility and pointlessness of war, if no hope is provided (not just this - most war films in fact). when they say movies give you a chance to escape, don't they generally mean some place happy?
