Harrowing World War One masterpiece told from the German point of view about idealistic German youths who volunteer for war because they think it is their duty to serve their country. Their commanding officer is their kind, friendly mailman, turned into a heartless sadistic brute in order to toughen them for battle.

They quickly endure the cold brutality of trench warfare. Especially poignant is when one of the bitter, forever scarred war heroes returns to Germany only to encounter naive youth who call him a traitor when he attempts to tell them the bitter truth.
